This boxset contains all five films in the seminal eighties Hong Kong horror-comedy Mr. Vampire film series featuring the infamous hopping vampires of Chinese folklore.

Mr. Vampire (1985)
Kou (Lam Ching Ying) is a quietly charismatic Taoist priest with one goal in life: to take out the undead with his cool Taoist shenanigans. Kou is called into action when an undead fellow (Yuen Wah) refuses to stay dead thanks to burial in a site with bad feng shui. He becomes a hopping terror begging for Kou’s exorcism, but Kou must also deal with his two students Ricky Hui and Chin Siu-Ho. One is haunted by a pretty ghost (Pauline Wong Siu Fung), and the other is infected for possible conversion into a hopping vampire! But when the undead vampire targets Kou’s granddaughter (Moon Lee), all bets are off! Sticky rice, paper amulets, and the fabulous sword of coins are the chosen weapons in Mr. Vampire, and Lam Ching Ying has the skills and the smarts to wield them! Featuring action sequences from the great Sammo Hung, Mr. Vampire is an entertaining action-horror-comedy that still charms and amazes years after its release.

Mr. Vampire II (1986)
The hopping vampires of Mr. Vampire are back, but this time they’re set to terrorize modern day Hong Kong! A sequel in name only, Mr. Vampire II again stars the great Lam Ching Ying as a Taoist priest charged with exorcising pesky undead corpses who hop around like rotting bunnies of death. When a band of grave robbers discovers a trio of sedated Chinese vampires (two adults and one child), they cart the bunch back to Hong Kong in hopes that they can be sold to the highest bidder. But the child vampire goes free, leading to an eventual escape by the rotting “parents”, who go in search of their child. Enter Lam Ching Ying as a Taoist herbalist who, along with photojournalist Yuen Biao and daughter Moon Lee, investigates the sudden appearance of the undead hopping terrors. Add in a gang of portly children who befriend the child vampire, and a famous “slow-motion” fight sequence, and you get Mr. Vampire II, a unique mixture of action, comedy, sentimentality, and Taoist shenanigans as one could only find in Hong Kong Cinema!

Mr. Vampire III (1987)
Returning to the period setting of the original Mr. VampireMr. Vampire III again casts coolly charismatic Lam Ching Ying as a Taoist exorcist who must contend with the undead. However, his primary target this time out is not an undead hopping vampiure, but a witch (Wong Yuk Waan) who practices black magic and leads a gang of rowdy horse thieves! Simultaneously, another Taoist priest (Richard Ng Yiu Hon) comes to town with two friendly ghosts in tow, and uses his spectral buddies to trick unsuspecting people into paying him to exorcise them! When all of these forces collide, hijinks and harrowing circumstances occur, meaning that once again Lam Ching Ying and his entertaining Taoist crime fighting methods must be called into duty! Mr. Vampire III is more in the spirit of the original Mr. Vampire, and comes complete with the chills, thrills, and exciting action sequences that audiences have come to expect from the entertaining Mr. Vampire films!

Mr. Vampire Saga IV (1988)
The fourth of the popular Mr. Vampire series, Mr. Vampire Saga 4 unfortunately does not star regular actor Lam Ching Ying, but more than compensates with Wu Ma and Anthony Chan as two grumpy priest types, acrobatic actor-director Chin Ka Lok as one of their assistants, and the lovely Loletta Lee as the eye candy du jour! Anthony Chan is the requisite Taoist priest, who’s engaged in a fued with his Monk neighbor (Wu Ma). Chin Ka Lok and Loletta Lee are the sidekicks, who play witness to the wacky shenanigans of the two fueding sages – until a royal transport comes to town bearing a gold coffin. As a Mr. Vampire movie would be nothing without a roving undead terror, the contents of the coffin breaks free, and carnage, mayhem, and cool Taoist shtick ensues! Anthony Chan and Wu Ma provide the Taoist action, while Chin Ka Lok is responsible for the kicks, punches, and bone-crunching falls that no Hong Kong action comedy would be complete without! Produced by Sammo Hung and directed by Mr. Vampire regular Ricky Lau Koon Wai, Mr. Vampire Saga 4 continues the horror-comedy series in grand style!

Vampire vs. Vampire (1989)
It’s East vs. West as the legendary Lam Ching Ying takes on a Western vampire in the fun-filled horror-comedy Vampire vs. Vampire! Lam Ching Ying is a tough Taoist priest who, along with assistants Chin Siu Ho and Lui Fong, uses special Taoist techniques to rid his town of hopping vampires and pesky ghosts. But when a blood-sucking Western vampire comes calling, the trio of period Chinese ghostbusters discover that their usual Taoist tricks may not be enough! A member of that unique Hong Kong genre, the hopping vampire movie, Vampire vs. Vampire does its celebrated cousin Mr. Vampire one better by bringing in an undead creature out of Bram Stoker lore! Lam Ching Ying also directed the film, which co-stars such eighties luminaries as Sandra Ng, Billy Lau, and singer Maria Cordero. Silly slapstick and acrobatic action from ace action director Stephen Tung add to the fun-filled Hong Kong Cinema package that is Lam Ching Ying’s Vampire vs. Vampire!

Things start to go badly when Maki finds a parasitical worm inside a fish – and wolfs it down, in the hope that it will keep her skinny. Her stomach later feels horrible and she relieves herself in an outhouse. The parasitic worm she ate had apparently laid eggs in her stomach and came out of in her diarrhea attack. Soon after, they are attacked by a crowd of poo-covered undead, who emerge from the outhouse toilet Maki used. The group seeks refuge in the home of the strange Dr. Tanaka, who conducts experiments on the zombies and the parasites, and who has another fate in mind for the five strangers. Can Megumi’s karate help them escape, or will she have to rely on the liberating power of flatulence to defeat her demented captor?

And there we go kids. Little bit of everything this week so just think about all the fine cinema coming your way and I’m sure you will have a title or two you wish to check out. As always stay safe and remember…the videostore loves you. Cheers!
